While the previous characteristics could be looked at as "accessories" there are some key decisions to be made in order to choose the cigar lighter that best suits your needs. These are: Purpose, the message you are trying to convey, cost, flame and fuel.
Purpose: Are you going to be hiking through the woods looking to sit back at the end of the day and have a smoke? If so, a wind and water resistant cigar lighter is a must. Several torch lighters come equipped with all the accessories that would make any outdoorsman jealous. Of course if you are gathering for Thursday night poker, then a table model might be ideal. Perhaps you a business man on the run. In this case I would suggest something compact that fits nicely in your coat pocket. Maybe a soft flame will be sufficient as you and your colleagues sit down for your weekly round table discussion. The reduced heat can prevent scorching.
What message are you trying to convey? Are you an Entrepreneur or Rock Star? If you are looking for the cigar lighter your peers will stop and take notice you might consider a specialty lighter. They come in every shape and size from a Hand Gun to the highly sought after Rock Star Micro Phone Lighter. If you are pulling up in a Ferrari then you'll probably want to be lighting up with a ST DuPont. As mentioned earlier, aside from coming in all shapes and sizes, the modern lighter is available in a host of colors and finishes.
Cost: How much do you want to spend? The higher the price the better the quality, this is no difference than with any other product. A butane lighter with a single flame could run you as little as $29 to as much as $199 and above. A midrange lighter can cost as much as $299. However, if you really want a nice, high end torch, nothing says quality like ST DuPont. Here you can spend close to a $999.
Flame and Fuel: This is going to be the most important factor. Flame and fuel have a direct effect on taste. Many low quality or cost effective fuels contain impurities. So whether you choose a single, double, or triple flame lighter a clean burning fuel makes for a better tasting cigar. My recommendation here would be to go with a butane lighter, which is a clean burning fuel that won't alter the cigar's taste. The butane cigar lighter is also wind resistant, waterproof, and provides a flame that allows for a more evenly lit cigar. A torch lighter also produces a flame with an intensity that can be more easily controlled.
So find a good cigar, choose the right lighter and have a smoke.
